Stop Smoking And Improve Your Life
By Michael Russell
Every day you make sure you're getting the right amount of fruits and vegetables in your diet. You exercise regularly and feel good about taking care of your health. You are also a smoker. Smoking is not going to help you feel better no matter what else you do to keep healthy. Cigarettes are made up of toxic substances and chemical compounds. The tar in cigarettes is a carcinogen that causes cancer. Nicotine elevates cholesterol levels and is very addictive.
Thousands of people die each year from smoking. Lung disease, lung cancer and emphysema are a few illnesses caused by smoking. Also, there is an increased risk of stroke and heart disease. Smoking can also affect the brain and is connected to depression and psychological suffering. Second-hand smoke can be hazardous for pregnant women. Children and infants have more ear infections and asthma symptoms when they inhale second-hand smoke.
There are many reasons to stop smoking. One of the best reasons to quit is that it will lengthen your life. Carbon monoxide levels in your body will drop and the oxygen will increase to normal levels in your blood. Your prospects of heart attack and disease will begin to improve. Your lung capacity will increase which will make it easier for you to breathe.
Physical addiction and a strong habit are two obstacles to get over when you stop smoking. Some people say that smoking relieves their stress and helps them to relax. This is one of the worst things you can do to relax. The nicotine releases a chemical called Dopamine. This causes a pleasure feeling but in reality, you're hurting your health. You start craving more and more. This is how you become addicted. There are other ways to relax and make yourself feel good. Exercise on a daily basis can give you a healthy emotional boost. After exercising, you will feel a temporary rush of endorphins that will bring on feelings of euphoria. Your stress response will also become regulated.
Make sure you're supporting your health with lots of rest, eight glasses of water a day and foods filled with nutrients. This will help any stress you may feel from giving up cigarettes. There are some supplements that could help with anxiety and cravings that giving up smoking may produce. B-complex vitamins keep your nerves healthy. Vitamin C is good for cravings or withdrawal symptoms. There is also a herb called Kava that can also help with anxiety from nicotine withdrawal.
You will also look younger when you don't smoke any more. Biochemical changes occur in our bodies from smoking. Your skin becomes dehydrated, which causes premature wrinkling. Your complexion may develop a yellowish or grayish color from not getting enough oxygen to the skin. This comes from the nicotine constricting your blood vessels. Your skin will improve dramatically when you aren't inhaling nicotine anymore.
While your body is recuperating from smoking, you may experience headaches, fatigue and moodiness. These symptoms are only temporary. Tell your family and friends what you are going through and that you need support. You can also join a support group.
